What to Do in Madrid on a Rainy Day

I’d have to say that, despite the constant heat and rain, Madrid is a city where there is always something to do. While the number of sunny days is ideal for discovering the city’s green spaces and visiting the most famous attractions, rainy days are not so boring if you find the necessary place. Therefore in this article, we will find out the best things to do and places to visit when you are in Madrid and it is raining.

1. Visit World-Class Museums

Madrid museums are populated with numerous outstanding pieces of art as well as other types of exhibits. It is always wonderful to witness the artistic and historical collections of the country especially when you keep yourself busy during the rainy days. Here are a few must-visit museums:

Museo del Prado

This museum is one of the biggest and visited art museums in the world; it consists of a great European art collection. The major Spanish artists as Velázquez, Goya, Murillo or Alonso Cano are represented and, in addition to them, such world masters as Rembrandt or Rubens for example.

Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Placed in the center of Madrid, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum houses one of the most extensive private art collections of the world, which ranges from classical to contemporary art. Starting from the Renaissance till Pop Art, all the types of art can be seen by visitors in this museum.

Reina Sofia Museum

For instance, if you have a focus on modern art, there is no museum you should not visit the Reina Sofia Museum. This museum houses Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ and includes the works of post-World War II artists and artists of the twentieth century; this museum will have appeal to art lovers.

2. Explore the Royal Palace

There is no way a visitor can miss the Royal Palace when in Madrid. Here is one team building site where, even on a rainy day, one is amazed by the great work done in this architecture. Its has a rich operational history; take a tour to discover about the history, architecture and interior of the palace as well as the gardens that surround the palace.

3. Indulge in Retail Therapy

As far as shopping is concerned, Madrid can definitely be considered a shopping mecca and the rainy day is as good a reason as any to hit the stores, streets, and malls. Gran Via with its major chain stores and modern architecture continues with the smaller stores and artistry in Malasaña with street fashion, clothing, accessories, furniture, and everything in between. It is also import to have a pause and to try the common Spanish tapas in one of the cozy cafes.

4. Visit El Retiro Park

Even though El Retiro Park is more enjoyable when the sun shines, it is probably even more so that when the rain falls too. Currently, the park turns into a beautiful green area where you can freely walk along the alleys holding a tree canopy above your head and listen to the drizzle. You shouldn’t also miss the glass palace, which hosts art pieces and installations.

5. Delve into Spanish Cuisine

In addition, rainy days allow one to have a beautiful reason to savor wonderful Spanish food. Find welcoming gastropubs and local taverns and taste real Spanish food, such as paella, tortilla española, churros with hot chocolate. Personally, what can be quite enjoyable is that it is a great way to first, exercise the language and second, warm the cockles of one’s heart.

6. Relax at a Café or Tea House

A good number of café culture EXISTS in Madrid and it could be nice to take a cup of tea or any hot beverage on any rainy day. Take a reader or just observe the passing of time with a steaming cup of Spanish coffee or a cup of tea.

7. Discover Hidden Gems

During the rainy day it is better to take the day to discover some more curious things about Madrid. Walking around, wander into small galleries, antique shops or an unusual book shop located at some of Kotor’s very narrow streets. Many of these out of the way places hold many hidden gems just waiting to be found.

Of course, rain is a spoiler especially when you are on tour, but Madrid provides you with many great things to do. It will prove a bore to no one, whatever art or history they are into, shopping or gastronomy enthusiast or just the nasty rainy day they are in Madrid for.
