The Amsterdam Red Light District: An Update on its Closure

by

Long have Amsterdam’s Red Light District been an iconic attraction for tourists, giving tourists a peek into Amsterdam’s unique culture and history. But the district has been temporarily closed thanks to recent events. This blog post explains why the closure happened and presents other activities you can explore in Amsterdam, should you find yourself there.

Why is The Red Light District closed?

Amsterdam closes the Red Light District due to the COVID-19 pandemic So much of the district brings in visitors that it makes it hard to maintain social distancing guidelines and keep workers and the public safe. The city wants to close the district in order to stave off the spread of the virus and preserve overall health of those involved.

Amsterdam: Alternative Activities

The Red Light District is closed for the time being, but that doesn’t preclude Amsterdam of hosting a variety of activities and attractions for visitors to experience. Here are some popular alternatives:

1. Canal Cruises

Take a leisurely canal cruise to explore charming canals of Amsterdam. From the beautiful architecture, picturesque bridges and iconic canal houses, to the rich history of the city learn about one of the most beautiful at the same time most beautiful cities in the world. The best thing is an Amsterdam canal cruise – it allows you to experience the unique Amsterdam charm and at the same time enjoy its most breathtaking scenery.

2. Museums

Visit Amsterdam’s world class museums to immerse yourself in art and culture. They have many options from the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum. From classic to contemporary art, history or science, you’ll find a museum to suit every taste.

3. Explore Neighborhoods

The many neighborhoods that comprise Amsterdam are each their own unique thing. Walk through Jordaan, De Pijp or Oud-West. Find cozy cafes, boutique shops and local markets. My tip is to get lost in the neighborhoods to really start getting to grips with the Amsterdamites way of life and local culture.

4. Visit the Anne Frank House

The Anne Frank House is certainly a visit to be had. Discover the harrowing story of Anne Frank and her family hiding in the Netherlands during World War II, walking through the secret annex. It’s a poignant museum that serves to remind everyone just how important tolerance, understanding and human rights are.

5. Enjoy Dutch Cuisine

When you are in Dutch, you are catered to delicious culture. Also try classic dishes such as Stroopwafels (syrup waffles), Bitterballen (deep fried meatballs) or Haring (raw herring). Of course, you also should pair your meal with a refreshing local brewed beer, or a Dutch gin called Jenever.

Stay Updated

With the ever changing situation around the closure of the Red Light District, it’s important to keep up to date on the recent news and advisories about it. You should refer to the locally relevant official websites of Amsterdam’s tourism board and local authorities for information on how the district is reopening.

Of course the closure of the Red Light District might be a let down for many people, but our first priority has to be to make everyone safe and healthy. The experience doesn’t necessarily have to be destroyed and if you can’t visit Amsterdam, you still can have a memorable one and even a fun one. Embrace the city, pack your bags, and forget that there is a computer or tablet to distract you from having an unforgettable memory!
