What to Do in Madrid for 7 Days

Madrid is Spain’s rightly said capital city which is full of energy and entertainment. If you are planning to travel to this astonishing city for one week then you’ll be surprised. The city most notable attractions include its impressive architecture, great museums, mouthwatering food and vibrant nightlife. As part of this blog post, we will provide a 7-day plan that will help you to maximize your experience in Madrid. Let’s get started!

Day 1: Explore the Historic Center

The first step is to start by taking Madrid’s central area also referred to as Madrid de los Austrias. The first place that will interest you is the Plaza Mayor which is the main set in Madrid. If you fancy some history just take a walk through the narrow streets and marvel unnoticed at the facade of the Royal Palace or the Almudena Cathedral. Of course, you should also taste some real Spanish tapas in one of the local bar/restaurant.

After that go to Puerta del Sol one of the important symbol of Madrid and admire the statue of the Bear and the Strawberry Tree. From there one can go to the lots of life on display in Gran Via – famous for its nightlife and shopping. After the meal it is time for a coffee and nothing beats Spanish hot chocolate with churros available at the beautiful cafés close by.

Day 2: Tour the Prado Museum and the Park of Retiro

On the second day of your trip, it’s recommended to engage in art and nature. Kick start your day with a dose of art at the Prado Museum; it has a hall of fame of European art that mutually include works of Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco. Wander round and take your time to look at the great art work that is provided in form of paintings and sculptures that dates back centuries.

Then, go to Retiro Park, which is actually one of the green zones in the very center of the city. Go boating in the boating lake of the park by hiring a paddle boat or if interested, have a picnic at the green compound. By the way you should definitely spend some time in the Crystal Palace and the Rose Garden.

Day 3: Explore the Royal Sites

Day three is also important; you should visit the Royal Palace of Madrid and the Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial. First visit in the morning is the Royal Palace, which is the official residence of the Spanish royal family. Unguided access to the palace that gives tourists an opportunity to have a glimpse into the sumptuous interiors, magnificent Paintings and gorgeous garden.

In the afternoon go outside the city to visit Royal Monastery of San Lorenzo de El Escorial which is list on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Take a look at the large structures, check out the Basilica and be amazed with the view from Herrería Cross.

Day 4: Finding artsy Madrid

Art lovers will find Madrid to their taste and on the fourth day, you will take time to appreciate arts and architecture. Get going in the morning by visiting Art Museum such as the Reina Sofia Museum that hosts great collections of modern and contemporary art. That is why artistic performances cannot be missed, and Picasso’s painting Guernica is worth highlighting.

Next to the museum, you should visit the colorful district of Malasaña. Ever since the graffiti and unusual outlets erupted in this area, this district has become quite popular among people who love to party at night. Stroll through the streets and when going round, it feels like being in bohemian area. Visit one of the local cafés and grab a coffee and about the local folk watching.

Day 5: Madrid’s Taste Buds

Of course, it is impossible to visit Madrid without considering what to eat in this amazing city. It may be your 5th day in Madrid, so now it is the right time for the gastronomic tour to taste specialties of Spain capital. Begin the day with what should be the best Spanish meal of the day, breakfast and in this case; Churros and hot chocolate at a café.

If you want to have a first contact with tapas you should follow a guided tapas tasting tour with foods like jamón ibérico, patatas bravas and tortilla española. Well accompanied with tapas, you should not leave the bar without a glass of sangria. For dinner dine in one of the local restaurants and taste such dishes as cocido madrileño or a traditional Spanish paella is-price.

Day 6: Day trip to Toledo

A well-deserved day trip destination is Toledo, the ancient mediaeval town, which is just an hour’s drive from Madrid. Influence by the Christian, Muslims and the Jewish culture, Toledo has been referred to as the ‘City of Three Cultures.

Stroll around the tightest alleys, go to Toledo Cathedral and lay your eyes on the Mirador del Valle. You should also think about tasting marzipan, an almond-based confectionery which has been produced in Toledo for hundreds of years.

Day 7: Shop and Relax

The last day of stay in Madrid gives you free time for shopping and merely strolling around the city. Take a stroll in the famous Gran Via which is actually the main shopping avenue in Madrid where you will lots of shops of clothes, accessories and other items. It is time for shopping! Visit the biggest department store in Spain called El Corte Inglés department store which offers both European and Spanish goods starting for famous brands and ending up with local food.

In the afternoon the jaunt that has to be made is to a Spanish hammam, a spa. Take advantage of the innovative concept of the steam rooms, saunas, and massage services offered. Conclude your day with a walk in the lovely Retiro Park and watch the gorgeous sunset over the lake.
